General Maintenance & Care
After your Great Lengths hair extensions are applied, avoid wetting your hair for the first 48 hours, whether it's an initial application or maintenance service. This crucial time allows the bonds to settle and ensures your extensions won't prematurely slide out due to exposure to cleansing chemicals. Please refrain from any coloring or chemical treatments on your hair extensions and avoid using tinted shampoos and conditioners. It's normal to notice a few naturally released hairs trapped in the bonds over time; this is not hair being pulled out by the extensions. We recommend scheduling a two-week check-up at your salon to ensure your extensions have settled correctly. If you experience bond slippage or discomfort, contact us to assess and address the issue.
Sleeping with Extensions
Before bedtime, gently secure your hair in a loose ponytail to prevent tangling while you sleep. Using a silk or satin pillowcase allows your hair to move freely. Ensure your hair is completely dry, brushed, and in a ponytail or plait before going to bed.
Styling Your Hair
You can use hot tools and hot rollers on your hair extensions, but maintain a safe distance of at least 3cm to 4cm from the hair bonds to avoid damage.
Swimming
Activities that expose your extensions to constant moisture, such as swimming in sea water or chlorine, may reduce their longevity. Before swimming, wet your hair thoroughly to prevent chlorine and saltwater adherence, and consider wearing a swimming cap. After swimming, apply Great Lengths Anti-Tap Water remedy to counteract alkalinity damage from the water and ensure the base area is dry.
Hair Washing
Use Great Lengths-recommended products designed to enhance the condition of your extensions (see our Recommended Products list). When showering, tilt your head backward and wash from the top down, avoiding downward-facing positions. Apply conditioners, detanglers, and masks from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the scalp/bond area. After showering, use the Great Lengths Anti-Tap Water remedy to restore your hair's natural pH balance. Dry your hair by wrapping it in a microfiber headwrap or towel to remove moisture. If you use a blow dryer, opt for medium to low heat and finish with a cool shot once your hair is entirely dry.
Brushing Your Hair
Brush your hair three times a day (twice a day for curly hair) using a Great Lengths brush to prevent matting. Avoid hard brush strokes and bristle brushes near the bonds to prevent slippage. To brush, separate your applied strands using your fingers and gently brush close to the scalp, starting from the nape of your neck and working section by section until your whole head is done. Use a wide-toothed comb to remove tangles from mid-strands to hair ends, avoiding the scalp area and the Great Lengths bonds.
